英語技術会議通訳、技術翻訳をしているマイク岩本です。商業英語、製鉄、自動車、IT、電気、機械、建築などが得意分野です。小さい頃から英語が好きで、英語一筋の職人です。フリーでこの仕事を始めて約20年になりますが、そのうち、通算でアメリカに5年、イギリスに3年ほど滞在しました。
結構な料金を払って、会議通訳を雇ったが、なかなか話が通じない。「いやいや、そうじゃなくて…」という言葉が喉まで出かかってくる。話をなんとか整理しようと、あれこれ言い方を変えて通訳してもらえばもらうほど、どんどん泥沼にはまっていく。そのうちいらいらは頂点に達し、「もうイヤだ、こんな会議」と心の中で叫んでしまう。そんなご経験はないですか。以前、こんなエンジニアがいました。仕事で外国に行ったのだが、同行した通訳が、ほとんど話が通じない。なんとか仕事を進めるために、仕方なく、自分で精一杯の英語でやってみる。でも、もちろん限界がある。通訳への苛立ちと、仕事への責任感、英語ができない自分へのもどかしさが重なって、ノイローゼになり、体調を崩してしまい、3ヶ月の仕事なのに2週間でギブアップ、日本に帰らざるを得なかったというのです。それもこれも、みんな通訳のせいです。
私は、そのような悲劇を一件でもなくしたいと思っています。
私にとって、会議に参加した国籍の違う人たちが、心から笑顔を見せてくれたときの喜び。それこそ、通訳冥利に尽きるというものです。癒し系コミュニケーションのプロとして、私が通訳した会議は、必ず全員笑顔で終わらせるという固い決意で仕事をしています。

I am a Tokyo-based, Japanese-native English-Japanese translator, technical conference interpreter and project manager. Mainly I translate in technical discussions, commercial business negotiations and video, teleconferences. I've been doing this job in freelance for 20 years. I'm the best available in the market.
Have you experienced something like this? You hire an interpreter and find out he (she) can hardly translate. You can see the puzzled face of your foreign guest. You are on the verge of shouting "That's not what I want to say!" So you try to express in other words, but more you get it translated, more you make it confused. Finally, in your mind, you yell to yourself "I hate this meeting!"
I know one engineer who was sent to overseas mission. He found out the interpreter was practically useless. So he decided to do it by himself. But naturally, his English ability was limited. He was more and more frustrated with the interpreter, his responsibility to pursue the job, and his lack of English ability, he had nervous breakdown and became very sick. He had to quit his 3-month mission in 2 weeks and had to come back to Japan.
All are the fault of the interpreter. I want to help you avoid such tragedy.
My aim is to be everybody's human translator. The meeting I translate always ends up everybody smiling (or even laughing).
